Living on Galiano island we have the occasional delight of seeing orcas traveling in pods and like at the peak of the crescendo one mighty orca breaches, leaping high into the air creating great excitement for all of us land-bound bipeds.

"Blue Heron"
old t-shirts, thread, and dye
Panel #115
I have lived on the west coast all my life where herons have always been in the background, from the shores of Galiano Island where they hunt alone, to the park down the street from my apartment in Vancouver's West End where hundreds of these gangly birds nest in the six trees that tower the noisy tennis courts. I have tried my best to represent one solitary heron here with machine appliqued fabric.

“Tako”
Rocks, Shells, Sea Glass in Cement
Panel #3
Jennie Brickwood was born and raised on the west coast of British Columbia and she has been living on Galiano Island since 2008.
I have always had a fascination with rocks and crystals and feel a sense of joy and tranquility while working with this natural element - Everything from the collection of the materials, to working with a collage, to the pride that is felt with the finished product. My time on Galiano Island has expanded my creative process and improved my work with natural collage, which I find unique and beautiful. In the near future I plan to take my love of collage and to continue to develop the process to create Rockwood Art.

"Swoosh"

Panel #177
I have been preoccupied with painting for the last ten years; I like to play with colour, contemplate different compositions and share my experiences with other artists. Painting has led me to observe, record and better understand my life. When possible I sketch and paint scenes, moments, people, and objects that I feel need to be remembered and interpreted. Since my retirement in 2000 I have enjoyed both the peace and the beauty of the water and boats of the West Coast. When sailing I always pack a water colour kit with me and the small paintings remind me of where I have been.
The boat image in “Swoosh”, my Kunamosk contribution, is modeled on a classic fishing boat of the west coast that spent her last days in Whaler Bay, Galiano Island. “Airflow” was built in Prince Rupert in 1937 and continued as a family working boat until last fall when it was decommissioned with love and towed to its burial spot on a cod reef near Galiano. This small image evokes for me the transitory nature of life. The boat is filled with the brilliant but transitory geranium and steered by a mischievous blue heron along for the ride.

Fused and Painted Glass
Panel #35
Originally trained in clay and have been working in glass for 20 years. Started with stained glass(cold) moved to blowing & casting(hot) and have settled into fusion, casting, slumping painting (warm- 1100-1900!).Glass and gardening are my shared passions which both have evolved since arriving on Galiano in 2003. In my life the only difference between fear and excitement is one word- Oh Boy! or Oh No!

Sandra Dolph
“Swimming and Flying in the Sea”
Ceramic Wall Relief
Panel #103
In 1971, Sandra obtained a BS in Art Education from New York State University College . Upon graduation, she taught at the Adirondack Center for the Arts as well as owned and operated a gallery in upstate New York . After immigrating to the Canadian Rockies in 1974 and establishing a homestead, Sandra taught and ran a clay studio specializing in salt/woodfired pottery. In 1989 she relocated to Galiano Island , British Columbia , where she has spent the many years making a home for her small family and establishing her studio and gallery set amongst the beautiful red cedars of BC. Over the years she has hosted and presented numerous workshops which have focused on various pottery techniques such as throwing, handbuilding and raku firing. Sandra’s visits to Japan began in 1998, where she studies, makes pots and meditates in a Zen Buddhist temple.
Sandra works with “lichen” glaze, named for its textured feel and appearance. The surface produced looks very much like the rocks and trees that grow on Galiano Island . The texture is produced by the addition of magnesium carbonate to the glaze, and is made interesting by the multiple layering of the glaze. Some of the tile and pottery pieces are high-fired, some are low-fired, some are the combination of the two, but all are influenced in color and feel by the beautiful West Coast environment

"Thing of Beauty"
Acrylic on Carved Wood
Panel #23
The ugly and the beautiful Ling Cod. Big and unnerving when you see them live but as you look closer they have the most incredible colours and designs. So many of us have no idea of the diverse and beautiful world just below the water. We spend so much time looking at the vast surface that we never really contemplate that complex underworld. One of my goals is to remove that boundary of air and water and have the viewer consider that space which is often just below our vision.

The making of art is such a personal journey, one that is often easier to share than to articulate. I often imagine myself an archeologist, digging deeper, looking further into the formations of the landscape; uncovering the myths that appear, exposed by tides and time.

Deblekha Guin
"Bull Kelp Love"
Mosaic Glass
Panel #60
Deblekha tries to squeeze her creative pursuits in between being a mom and running an organization that helps marginalized youth to share their visions and tell their stories through the media arts (www.accesstomedia.org).
Not only did this piece ("Bull Kelp Love") give her an opportunity to make lots of trips to the beach (in search of beach glass), but she hoped that focusing on the beauty of the 'bull' would help her overcome her fear of swimming through kelp beds. The jury remains out about whether or not this was an effective form of 'art therapy'.

The idea for this piece came from looking down by my feet while walking near home and seeing the many little creatures which spend their lives creeping and hunting amongst the plant litter on the forest floor.
bio: I first studied visual arts at the University of Victoria in the late
sixties, and continued to study while traveling in New Zealand and Australia
for several years. Shortly after returning to Canada I moved with my husband to Galiano Island, and here we have lived since. I work primarily in the media of paint, printmaking and textile arts.

"Wrecking Ball : Glass Sponge Reef"
Acrylic
Panel #204
Until 1988, Glass Sponge Reefs were known only as immense Cretaceous era fossil formations built 200- 40 million years ago. It was a great surprise when living reefs were found 200 metres deep in Hecate Strait, B.C., growing up to 35 km.long, 15 km. wide, and 25 metres tall. Through 2007, researchers have found several smaller reefs in shallower waters of the Strait of Georgia and 1 large one off the Washington coast. The areas around these fragile reef formations show higher levels of fish production than in the surrounding waters. Their complex 3-dimensional structures serve as valuable habitat concentrating nutrients and safety for diverse organisms and creating protective nurseries for countless young, including rockfish, flat fish, lingcod, octopus, crab, shrimp, and scallop.
Living here for 9,000 years, the reefs are now threatened by commercial and sport fisheries that drop trap lines on them, pull trawl nets across them and drag down-rigger “cannonball” weights through them. Uniquely formed of a silica crystal skeletal structure covered by thin living tissue, the fragile sponges are torn apart or pulled up in nets as by-catch. They grow extremely slowly.
Help protect these reefs, found nowhere else in the world, within a National Marine Conservation Area!

I was born in England 68 years ago. I believe that I came into the world not only screaming blue murder but waving a scrap of paper in one hand and a stump or a pencil in the other .Drawing came naturally and was a source of amusement thoughout most of my life, and probably will continue to be until rheumatism keeps me from holding that stump of pencil.
In my tile I saw fish and lots of them.

"Surf"
Acrylic

Surf
Surfacing over the next breaking wave,
Salutes at sunrise with
Sprays of mist,
Shaking loose like pearls.
Over dark shapes curving
Up and out of the water,
And down and over and gone.
Shining backs of mist - wrapped whales,
Rounded, wet and older than time.
Strands of submerged songs
Echoing.
Sent down the deep ocean channels,
to the distant reaches and back.
Songs of mythic battles,
Love, migration, uncertainty,
Life, death, the recurring tunes.
Sent out through the blue waves amidst
whispers, chirps, twitters, squeals and drones.
Slow turns on an infinite aquatic ferris wheel,
Top fins wave like wild banners,
Sprays of mist
Shaking loose like pearls.

The gem like quality of a fish freshly out of water has kept me fascinated ever since I can remember. There is something so intriguing about Neptune's Kingdom. I enjoyed capturing through layers of glazes, the glistening of their bodies in a fluid environment. Their speckled backs and silvery colors are so very attractive to me. Of course their speckles are part of a very successful camouflage, a way of being invisible at a most vulnerable time. They spawn like salmon, on a gravel bed in the shallow waters of a riverbed.

"Looking North up Georgia Strait from Galiano Island"
Acrylic
Panel #122
Galiano Island is long and thin and in the middle a ridge of hills winds up the island like a spine. On this northeast side you look across to the Continent and north up Georgia Strait. The sky is huge and the weather and light change constantly. A dark and rugged sky can hang over you while up ahead the ocean is brightening and the sky is clearing and light. The mountains can appear across the strait like a huge fortress and next minute, are covered in clouds with just the tops sticking through. While the tide is out the seals take a rest on a rocky outcrop, a safe distance from the shore. Their deep guttural sounds are like the mysterious voice of the sea. It is a beautiful place and the ever-changing light, surface of the water and sky remind me why I live here and paint."
